Porta Filliou, 1977
PAL, sound, black and white
During his residence as an artist at the Arton Center (Canada), Robert Filliou made this film, in collaboration with Clive Robertson and Marcella Bienvenue, as a video supplement to his book, T eaching and Learning as Performing Arts (1970). This document follows the artists career and shows fragments of what he calls his "permanent creation": performances (The Gong Show, What's Happening), films, poetic happenings, environments and non-instrumental music.
In the Sixties, as an active member of the Fluxus network, he created a broad corpus of ephemeral and "interminable" works that were philosophical thoughts on art as knowledge of the world, all of which was based upon the principle of equiva lence: the equivalence of words, languages, images, space, time, learning and non-learning. Throughout this work which is rigorous to the point of asceticism, he continues his learning process and permanent redefinition of the world.
