In this video, Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevicius focuses on the end of the Soviet era in Lithuania and the amnesia currently afflicting the country. Starting from two existing video recordings of the same scene – the dismantling of a sculpture of Lenin in a public square in Vilnius in 1991 – he takes a nonconformist view of the event and subtly suggests celebrating the installation. “Although the reality of the Soviet Union is further and further away and forgotten by the majority of east Europeans, it is again becoming possible to envisage the ideas of socialism as possible alternatives to ultra-liberalism”, the artist declares.
