Video Synthetizer and TV Cello Collectibles Early Color TV Manipulations by Nam June Paik, 1965/1968 Video Commune TV Cello Premiere, 1971, 1965 - 1971

PAL, silent, colour

The first works produced jointly by Nam June Paik and Yud Yalkut have recently been restored and edited in two tapes. Their historical nature is undeniable, as they give an insight into Nam June Paik's beginnings on most of the pathways he would later develop. We rediscover almost everything that went to make up Global Groove (1973) – the "first edition" video of electronic art and the manifesto of video creation.

This first compilation consists of three sequences:

- Early Color TV Manipulation, 1965-1968, shows the first experimental creation of electronic images, based on the manipulation of transistors and resistors of a television set. These abstract images - waving, and swinging and changing colour, surging forth at random as a result of maladjustment – show that a monitor can also be an instrument and not just a simple receiver of images.

- Video Commune shows early experimentation with image manipulation, which can be recognised from time to time in Nam June Paik's performances and installations. We find him making shadow-play on a white screen or moving a magnet across a television screen.

- TV Cello Premiere, 1971, is the first document on Charlotte Moorman's performances, with Nam June Paik's legendary video cello. The cellist plays this video cello, where the body of the instrument is three monitors. By rubbing the strings, she deforms and warps the pre-recorded images on the screen (images of Janis Joplin, Nam June Paik at the piano, Charlotte Moorman playing the TV Cello). The relationship between monitor / instrument and images / music becomes literal.
